WEBINAR ON WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY 🚭🚭

A webinar on World Tobacco Day was conducted on 31st May 2021. The Honourable Resource Person was Hari Prasad. S (Civil Excise Officer). He tells about the harmful effects of tobacco use in our society and about Vimukthi. The program was cordinated by Mrs. Susan George (Asst. Prof.in Perspectives In Education)                                                                                        Vimukthi is an anti-narcotics campaign launched by the Government of Kerala to highlight the seriousness of the situation and to create awareness among the people, especially the youth. It is a collective effort aims at eradicating all sorts of narcotic substances from Kerala.                                                                    Moto of Vimukthi - "Nalathe Keralam Lahari Muktha Navakeralam.".                        

World No Tobacco Day - May 31

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on 31 May. This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what the World Health Organization (WHO) is doing to fight against the use of tobacco, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.

Ash trays with fresh flowers are a common symbol of World No Tobacco Day.                                                           The theme this year is 'Commit to Quit', which assumes significant importance in the present times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID infection and lung complications in smokers

COVID predominantly affects the lungs and smoking too damages the lungs. Worldwide research suggests that there is a higher incidence of severe lung complications following COVID in smokers as compared to non-smokers. The World Health Organisation released a scientific brief earlier this year showing that smokers are at higher risk of developing severe disease and death from COVID-19.

Through this webinar we get awareness about Covid threat, symptoms and its prevention among people. He explained the importance of social distancing and other preventive measures prescribed by the government with good attitude for coronavirus.

Biodiversity plays a major role in maintaining the balance of the earth. It is the foundation of ecosystem services to which human well-being is intimately linked. All the variety of animals, plants, fungi, and even microorganisms like bacteria make up our natural world.

Each of these species and organisms works together in ecosystems, like an intricate web, to maintain balance and support life. If one of them gets extinct, then others will start getting endangered o. "When biodiversity has a problem, humanity has a problem. Biological diversity resources are the pillars upon which we build civilizations. But the loss of biodiversity threatens all, including our health.

It has been proven that biodiversity loss could expand zoonoses - diseases transmitted from animals to humans- while, on the other hand, if we keep biodiversity intact, it offers excellent tools to fight against pandemics like those caused by coronaviruses."Therefore, to spread awareness and to increase understanding of the biodiversity issue, the UN decided to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity annually.International Day for Biological Diversity is observed every year on May 22.

World Astronomy Day🌞🌞🌜🌛🌚🌟🌟⭐⭐💥💥 - Put The Universe In Your Hands.

The mysteries of outer space and astronomy have fascinated the world for as long as we have recorded history. It is almost impossible to look up at the night sky on a clear evening and not be caught up in the sense of wonder and amazement at how big the universe truly is compared to us.                                           International Astronomy Day is a way for astronomy enthusiasts and professionals to share their knowledge and love of outer space with the general public. It is also a way for everyone interested in space to explore their passion and increase their knowledge. 

For those especially enthusiastic about space, it is important to know that this day is celebrated twice a year! There is one in the spring and another in the fall to celebrate the changing constellations and various things to observe at different times of the year in space. 

HISTORY OF WORLD ASTRONOMY DAY

Astronomy is a natural science that has been ever-present in human history. Our ancestors looked at the night sky, filled with curiosity about what was beyond our planet with the same fervor as we do. Indigenous cultures from around the world practiced astrology with the naked eye and it played a key role in their societies. A famous example of this was Mayan astronomy. They were avid observers of the sky, keeping recordings and producing calendars and star charts. To them, the actions of the gods could be read in the movement of the stars, moon, and sun.

While many different cultures around the world made great advances in astronomy, there probably isn’t a more revered astronomer than Nicolaus Copernicus. He first proposed that the earth revolved around the sun. This was a truly revolutionary idea (no pun intended), since it was widely believed by many astronomers and religions that the earth was the center of the universe. Challenging this, Copernicus proposed that humanity was only a part of a much more complex system of space and time.

World Astronomy Day was started by Doug Berger, who at the time was the president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California. He intended to get people in urban areas interested in astronomy. To do this, he set up telescopes that people could use to enjoy gazing at space. Since then, the event has gained popularity and the support of organizations such as educational institutions, space agencies, and museums.

International Day of Families👪👪👪👬👬🧑‍🤝‍🧑🧑‍🤝‍🧑

The International Day of Families is marked every year on 15th May. A United Nations-designated day, the International Day of Families, focuses on key issues central to the well-being of families across the world like health, education, children's rights, gender equality, work-family balance and social inclusion among others.                                                                                    The coronavirus pandemic has suddenly pressed the pause button on the daily routine of people's lives. Lockdowns forced families to stay at home. Schools have been closed and offices shut. Technology became the only way to stay in touch with friends and family. Tip-toeing in the virtual space seems to have become the dominant activity for many of us. New technologies are now the only way out. 

 Theme of International Day of Families 2021

The theme of this year's International Day of Families is: Families and New Technologies. According to the background document of  this year's theme, ''The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the importance of digital technologies for work, education and communication. The pandemic has accelerated technological changes that had already been underway both in society and at work, including the expanded use of digital platforms and related technological innovations like cloud computing and the use of big data and algorithms...".       

                                                                

Significance of International Day of Families 2021

This year's International Day for Families focuses a lot on digital technology - both in urban and rural space. Here are a few important facts:

1. Impact of digital technologies on children at different stages.
2. As classrooms have become virtual and remote learning has replaced teacher-student interactions, parents at home have a bigger role to play. 
3. Enabling parents to do this without getting exhausted is also one of the key issues.
4. Analysis of technology and its impact on families including equity, access, privacy and online safety.
5. Digital literacy and dissemination of information and awareness.
6. Ensuring mental and physical well-being of parents and children and, handling negative impacts of technology like screen fatigue and cyber security.   
   
                                                                 

                       The International Day of Families was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993. The resolution reflects the importance global communities attach to families. The International Day of Families gives governments, non-profit organisations and other groups, working in the area, to promote awareness of issues relating to the well-being of families.

International Nurses Day - May 12👩‍🔬👩‍🔬👩‍🔬

Every year we observe May 12 as International Nurses Day along with the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. International Nurses Day is observed to honour nurses every year on May 12. Nurses are essential caretakers for a prosperous society. During this pandemic, their extraordinary contribution has proved to inspire their dedication and hard work towards nursing.

History of International Nurses Day

The celebration of International Nurses Day started in 1965 by the International Council of Nurses(ICN). This day is the birth anniversary of the famous Florence Nightingale. She was an English nurse, social reformer, and statistician. During the Crimean war, she gained fame while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses, being the pillar of modern nursing. She brought a reputation for nursing and became an icon in Victorian culture.

This day was initially proposed by Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, but it was not approved. Finally, after 20 years, May 12 was chosen as the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. Since then, the International Council of Nurses(ICN) has been producing and distributing resources and evidence on International Nurses ‘Day.

A webinar on Age Of Artificial Intelligence was conducted on 11th May . The honourable resource person was Dr. Sibi. K .S.                                                           Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. The term may also be applied to any machine that exhibits traits associated with a human mind such as learning and problem-solving.

The ideal characteristic of artificial intelligence is its ability to rationalize and take actions that have the best chance of achieving a specific goal. A subset of artificial intelligence is machine learning, which refers to the concept that computer programs can automatically learn from and adapt to new data without being assisted by humans. Deep learning techniques enable this automatic learning through the absorption of huge amounts of unstructured data such as text, images, or video.

National Technology Day is celebrated every year on May 11 to highlight the achievements of engineers and scientists in the field of technology and science. The day acts as a reminder of the country's technological advancements. It was first observed on May 11, 1999, and aims to commemorate the scientific and technological achievements of Indian scientists and engineers.

National Technology Day holds great importance because on this particular day in 1998, India achieved multiple notable technological progressions. Every year since 1999, the Technology Development Board (TDB) commemorates the day by honouring technological innovations that have added to the national growth.

National Technology Day 2021: Theme

Every year, the Technology Development Board (TDB) selects a theme for each year's event, this year the theme of the National Technology Day 2021 theme is “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future”.

National Technology Day: History

Former Indian PM Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee coined this term to celebrate the contributions made by Indian scientists. May 11 is also the day when India conducted its first successful test in Pokhran.

On May 11, 1998, India successfully fired the Shakti-I nuclear missile at an Army test range in Rajasthan's Pokhran. Two days later, the country conducted two more nuclear tests as a part of the same operation, following which India joined the elite club of nuclear power nations.

Apart from this, India on this day also tested its first indigenous aircraft 'Hansa-3' which flew from Bengaluru. After testing Hansa-3, India performed a successful test firing of the Trishul missile on May 11, 1998, and added another feather to the cap of the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
